Please, tell me all your thoughts on Georgette Heyer!

Tue, 01 May 2012 23:15:59 GMT

Posted by: gyre

For my final assignment in my databases class, I'm making a database of Heyer romances. The idea behind it is that a user could search for books with a certain type of hero or heroine, or remind themselves which book is Black Sheep and which is Lady of Quality, or figure out which Heyer book to recommend to a friend who didn't like Sylvester but liked Venetia. It will include reader reviews, favorites, and least-favorites. No one will be seeing this information but my teacher, and in theory I could make it all up, but that's no fun.

Anyway, if you're reading this and you're in the mood to rhapsodize about Georgette Heyer, or you're in the mood to complain about how much of a jerk Sherry in Friday's Child is, please take a second to tell me some of your thoughts. You can just tell me your favorite book, or you can write a whole essay -- all information is good! I'm interested in hearing:

Favorite book(s): (feel free to add an estimate of how many times you've read 'em, if you can guess)
Least favorite book(s):
Favorite character(s):
Least favorite character(s):
Are there any Heyer books you liked at first but liked less on rereading? Any books you didn't like at first that have really grown on you?
And, for a bonus, which books do you get mixed up? I always get The Quiet Gentleman and Unknown Ajax confused.

Thanks so much!

(I also posted this to heyer_haven on livejournal under my lj identity, so apologies to anyone who's getting this twice.)

Hi there!

Hi, everyone!

I don't know if introductory posts are the thing here, but I thought I'd make one. Hi there, I'm Tracy. I discovered Georgette Heyer's books a couple of years ago, when I mentioned to a friend that I was reading Lauren Willig's Pink Carnation series & she told me that I might like Heyer's Regencies if I liked those.

I moved in with my Gran to be a home caretaker for her after she had a stroke over a year and a half ago, & I've relied pretty heavily on my local library (two branches, about 30 & 45 minutes away respectively -- yay for having two that are easy to get to!) to find new reading material. I was so happy to find that they have a lot of Heyer's books! So far I've read all 10 from one library, & I'm working my way through what they have in the other.

The most recent Heyer I've read is Devil's Cub a few weeks ago -- so far, that's been my favorite of the ones I've read. I've read online that it's a sequel to These Old Shades so I really want to find that one & read it. I love the characters!

Could anyone give me their recommendations of what they think are the best Heyers? One of the libraries I go to has 14 of her books that the other one doesn't, so I have lots to choose from & I'm wondering which ones other fans of her work like the best. :)

I'm also a big fan of Victoria Holt/Jean Plaidy/Philippa Carr (all the same person) and Phyllis Whitney, even though their books aren't Regencies. Does anyone here read them, too?

Despatches on Dreamwidth

Thu, 23 Sep 2010 09:39:12 GMT

Posted by: sharpiefan

Just a quick head's-up to alert people to the fact that we now have an edition of despatches here on DW. I am totally in awe of those who created the original Despatches on LJ - which for the past few months has been in the more-than-capable hands of tootsiemuppet, and I have felt that there is a need for a DW version.

If anyone has a fic journal or icon journal where they post AoS works, or is planning to start a comm for an AoS fandom (such as Sharpe or Hornblower) and would like their work to reach a wider audience, please post a link in reply to the post in despatch_reader, and I will make sure your work gets included.

If we want the fandom content here that we had on LJ, we will have to produce it ourselves. The more content we have, the more people are likely to move over from LJ to add to it. despatches is but a small part of that. I hope it will help.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank damned_colonial, nolivingman, vanilla_elf and tootsiemuppet for all the work they have put into the LJ version. I can only admire and emulate, and I hope that this will be seen for what it is: a tribute to your hard work and not an attempt to usurp your ideas. It is because of what Despatches is on LJ that I felt we needed a version here on DW. Thank you.

Welcome to all our new members. Sorry I've been a bit of an absent mod - I had my notifications set up wrongly and missed stuff. It's sorted now, so do let me know of any questions or issues that need mod attention.

And now for some content. Feel free to post reviews here, or links to fanfic or art or anything Heyer-related. I'm also thinking ahead to Yuletide - are there any particular plot-bunnies you'd like to see written, or characters you want more fic about?

Would people like to have a monthly book discussion here? Should we try running challenges like on the old Heyer mailing list, for those of you familiar with that?

Show the Colours: A Napoleonic Wars RPG

Thu, 09 Sep 2010 00:16:44 GMT

Posted by: sharpiefan

This is my first post here and I hope that it's OK to post this.

Welcome to the Napoleonic Wars.

It is May 1809. Armies are on the move to fight battles that will decide the fate of nations.

The Navy

Four years ago, the British fought and defeated the combined fleets of France and Spain, breaking the naval power of France. They won a glorious victory at the cost of their Admiral's life. Last year, the French army entered Spain and the Spanish joined the war against them.

French sea-power is broken, but her navy is not prepared to admit total defeat. A rogue frigate has been sighted off the Portuguese coast. Is this all that remains of the French navy – or is there something more sinister happening?

The Army

The French army has Europe under its sway and has remained undefeated... until last year when a small British force won two battles in Portugal. Victory was short-lived, however. Sir John Moore led a fighting retreat 400 miles across Spain to Corunna, where he turned to fight to gain time to embark Britain's last army. He died at the moment of victory knowing he'd won.

A new Army has arrived in Portugal and is marching north after the French, determined to avenge their General. In charge is Sir Arthur Wellesley, who took them to victory a year before. The French are not accustomed to defeat and the struggle will be a long one.

~ ~ ~

This is a world at war. From battles at sea to skirmishes on land to the secret fact-finding missions of spies of both sides, there is danger at every turn. There is friendship and camaraderie, too. But the clouds are gathering.

Where do your loyalties lie?

~ ~ ~

~ Show the Colours is a text-based RPG on a message-board forum, with a simple, yet fun, format. The board is easy to read and navigate.
~ Show the Colours is open to all role-players from beginners to intermediate.
~ We have been around for two years now, so we are not a flash in the pan.
~ We have a small but friendly group of players, based mainly in Europe and America.
~ Although we don't currently have any storylines taking place in England, there is potential for such threads, plots and storylines.
~ We accept characters from most of the major AoS series and canons. I'd love to see Captain Staple, or Colonel Audley, or any of Heyer's other military characters during their Peninsular days.
~ We also accept original characters and historical people.
~ A knowledge of the period is not essential, but you should be willing to learn.
~ If you have any questions, please ask and I will do my best to answer. Or pop in and ask in the Cbox - we're a very friendly bunch.
Join Show the Colours and change history

Heyer fandom

Where do you go for Heyer fandom or other Regency fandoms?

I know there's the age_of_sail community on Dreamwidth, and regency_romance, and then there's the Heyer mailing list and the Masquerade list. (Though I'm not on the Heyer list at the moment - is anyone else?) Does anyone know any good LJ communities? I found a few bits of fic on Yuletide, but not very much.

As an intro post, which is your favourite book by Heyer?

Also, if anyone is inspired to create us an icon, that would be great.
